Danvers 3 - Marblehead 1
The Varsity Girls Soccer Team hosted rival Marblehead Friday night. Marblehead came into the game having lost only 1 game, to Masco 3-2. The game went back and forth early on in the match. Danvers defended extremely well and didn't give Marblehead any good opportunities. The Magician defense also was tough and The Falcons were kept of the scoreboard until the 30th minute of the first half. Junior, Emma Sutherland received a ball off a throw in down the line by freshman, Maddie Hannas. Sutherland beat her defender and sent a crossing pass across the goal box. Junior, Lila Doucette "dummied" the ball through her legs to oncoming senior, Georgia Prouty. Prouty right footed her shot past the visiting goalkeeper for the goal giving the hosts the 1-0 lead.
"That was a beautiful goal. Emma played a great ball across and Lila was smart to let it through to Georgia. Great heads up thinking on her part. We had just had a goal taken away from us about 8 minutes earlier so it was huge to get the goal before halftime."
Danvers got the second goal of the game only 4 minutes into the second half. Senior Captain, Brooke Wynott sent a ball into junior, DeAnna Figueiredo. Figueiredo's initial shot was saved by the Marblehead keeper. But she gave up a rebound and DeAnna had followed her shot. The quick junior, pounced on the rebound and put home the goal for the 2-0 lead.
"That goal by Dee was all heart. She never stopped working, after her initial shot and she was rewarded for her effort with the goal."
Not long after, freshman Cassidy Randall made a huge defensive play on a Magician corner kick when she blocked a shot, guarding the post to keep the lead at 2. The 2 goal lead didn't last long however, as Marblehead was able to get one back 7 minutes later. However, Danvers responded quickly only 2 minutes after with a beautiful goal of their own. Junior, Addi McCarty passed to Georgia Prouty. Prouty noticed the Marblead keeper was well off her line. The senior took a wicked shot from 35 yards out that sailed into the back of the net giving the Falcons the 2 goal cushion again.
The Danvers defense took it from there to close the door on the visitors. McCarty, Hannas, Randall, juniors Lila Flynn and Sabina Sturgeon and freshman Ali Doucette did well to stop any attacks the Magicians could get started. Junior Ashley Freitas dominated the midfield with her aggressive play. Senior Gianna Sutherland and junior Claudia Drakos added speed and intensity to the Danvers attack and freshman Kaia Glover played well offensively and defensively in the midfield. When the final whistle blew, Danvers had a hard fought 3-1 victory over a very good Team. Senior goalkeeper, Maddie Dembowski made 9 saves on the evening in the Danvers net.
"That was the best and most exciting attack we've put together in quite a while. We were flying up top tonight and were attacking with a lot of numbers. Lila Doucette really got us going. She was intense tonight and playing at such a high level. She really ignited our offense when we needed it. I thought her sister, Ali was incredible tonight as well. She's had a great week defensively for us playing all 80 minutes in both our games this week. She's really defending well. Ashley continued her solid play as our "6" and Georgia had a couple of beautiful goals. This was our best game this season so far."
With the win, Danvers improved to 5-1 on the young season. They'll take it to the road next week with 2, away night games. They'll play at Swampscott Monday night at 7:00 and at Peabody on Wednesday, 5:30.
