Danvers 3 - Lynnfield 3
Danvers traveled to Lynnfield Saturday afternoon to take on the Pioneers on their senior day. Lynnfield at 11-2-1 was tied for first in the Cape Ann league and was the 6th ranked team in the D3 power rankings. Danvers had a extremely rough start to the game giving up a goal in the second minute of action and then another goal in the fifth minute. Danvers had barely blinked and was already down 2-0.

“They came at us hard. We’ve been pretty regular about starting off slow this year. We could have avoided the first goal, but the second one was a perfectly bended corner kick that was a “hats off” kind of goal. Still, we felt we had a lot of game to play and could turn it around."

The Falcons did turn it around quickly. Lily Delefano came in at center back alongside Ali Doucette and the two defenders tightened up the defense around them. Cassidy Randall and Lila Flynn dominated the outside and shut down Lynnfield speed. Center back regular, Addi McCarty came back into the game after a brief injury and played up a spot on the field at the holding mid position. She seemed to give the visitors a real boost with the move. Midfielders Kaia Glover, Claudia, Drakos, and Maggie Lamar all added hard play in the middle of the field. Goalkeeper, Taylor Landry made an incredible right handed save Midway through the first half in less than a minute later, DeAnna Figueiredo made a goal line stop at a crucial moment of the game.

“We were really starting to play well, so Taylors save was so big, and right at a major point in the game. Making that goal line stop was huge too. Those plays kept us in the game."

Not long after, Sabina Sturgeon took a shot from her right wing position. The Lynnfield goalkeeper struggled with it a shot, and it looked as though it crossed the goal line, but the goal was not allowed keeping the game 2 to 0. With under 10 minutes to play in a half, Lila Doucette came into the game to play center back with her sister Ali. The two played strong together. Danny Scarpaci came in at left back and made a quick impact with a solid attempt on the Lynnfield net. With under two minutes to play in the half Lila Doucette hit a long ball. They found the feet of Rylee Sullivan. Sullivan buried the shot making the score 2 to 1 just before halftime.

Danvers came out on fire in the second half. Six minutes in, Ashley Freitas sent a low ball across the box that Deanna Figueiredo dummied through. The cross found a wide open Riley Sullivan, who scored again, making it 2 to 2. Danvers controlled play throughout. Emma Sutherland and Doucette combined well in the middle of the field finding forwards Figueiredo, Sullivan and Maddie Hanas on many open runs. The falcons had multiple opportunities, but couldn’t get to go ahead goal. Then with 21 minutes to play Lynnfield struck again, this time from a distance, making it 3-2.

Danvers never gave up and turned up the intensity even more. Hanas, who had been moved to right back attacked hard up the right side in Delefano and Ali. Doucette broke up several attempts by the Lynnfield Forwards. With less than two minutes remaining, Lila Doucette slid a ball across the box from her left side of the field and once again, Riley Sullivan was wide open. The freshman booted home her third goal of the game, making it 3 to 3. When the final whistle sounded, Danvers, earned awell deserved, come from behind twice, 3 to 3 tie. This was a very good Lynnfield team. With the tie, Danvers punched their ticket into the MIAA state tournament for the 34th consecutive year.

“That was a huge comeback for us and I’m so glad the girls earned the point to get them qualified for the tournament. Lily was a major part of our access to success today. She was also steady in the back and it really opened up so attacking options for us with Addi. Rylee Sullivan was incredible as well. The three goals were awesome, but she played a terrific game from start to finish. Her skill on the ball really showed through today and she was making super dangerous runs all game long.”

Danvers improved to 8-5-2 with the tie and next plays Monday night at Home versus Salem. Danvers will be celebrating their 10 seniors on that evening.
