Danvers 9 - Winthrop 0
The Danvers Girls Varsity Soccer Team hosted Winthrop Thursday afternoon. Danvers scored quickly with junior Lila Doucette getting the eventual game winner in the 2nd minute of play, assisted by senior captain Georgia Prouty. 4 minutes later, Prouty added one of her own set up by junior, Ashley Freitas to make it 2-0. Danvers got 4 more late in the first half. Emma Sutherland scored from 40 yards out on a wicked shot. Doucette added the next 2, both assisted by freshman Kaia Glover. Junior, DeAnna Figueiredo got the sixth and last goal of the half off another assist from Freitas.
"We played very unselfish today. The girls moved the ball well and worked hard to set up their teammates. Kaia, Ashley and DeAnna all played very well in the middle of the field. Everything was 2 touch passing and the ball moved quickly."
Danvers got 3 more goals in the second half, all from seniors and all were the first of their careers. Lizzie Owen punched home a perfect pass from classmate, Kayla Houston. Liv Page found the back of the net off a Prouty pass. Finishing off the scoring was starting goalkeeper, senior captain Maddie Dembowski who finished from another Prouty set up.
"The Team was very excited to see Lizzie, Liv and Maddie score. All 3 were pretty goals, built up from unselfish play from their Teammates. It was also awesome to see Kayla set up Lizzie on her goal."
Lila Doucette played the final 20 minutes of the game in net to help preserve the shutout with Maddie Dembowski. Coach Hinchion also noted the fine play of seniors, Maddie Shairs and Tabitha Sears.
"The season is about to get much, much tougher next week. We have a couple of very big games coming up."
Danvers improves to 4-0 with the victory.
