Danvers 3 - Swampscott 0

The Danvers Girls Varsity Soccer Team traveled to Swampscott Monday evening to take on a Team that tied them 2-2 at Home a year ago.  Danvers maintained possession throughout most of the game but lacked an urgency to score in the first half.  It wasn't until the 34th minute that they finally broke through.  Junior defender, Sabina Sturgeon beat her man and dribbled up the right side of the field, then crossed the ball to the center.  Senior captain, Georgia Prouty received the pass from about 30 yards out and fired a great shot that beat the Swampscott goalie, giving the Falcons the much needed goal.  Only 4 minutes later, freshman defender, Maddie Hanas scored her varsity goal to increase the lead.  A ball played towards the Swampscott goal created havoc when senior captains Prouty and Brooke Wynott pressured the Big Blue defense.  The result was the ball finding a wide open Hanas who made sure to blast the ball home into the net.

"We waited a little to long to get on the scoreboard tonight.  We didn't seem as focused as usual and I think we just expected to score easier than we did.  Swampscott kept lots of defenders back and made it difficult on us.  Georgia's goal from far out and Maddie's goal with 2 minutes left in the half were huge for us."

Danvers continued to dominate more in the second half.  Addi McCarty did very well to break up several plays from her center back position.  Hanas, Sturgeon and junior Lila Flynn took care of shutting down the outside areas of the field with tight defending.  Ashley Freitas was a 50/50 ball winning machine in the middle of the field.  About 20 minutes into the half, Danvers made it a 3 goal lead.  Senior, Gianna Sutherland and junior Claudia Drakos worked together to get a pass to open teammate, junior Lila Doucette.  Doucette hit a wicked screamer of a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net.

"That was a beautiful shot from Lila.  She hit that ball so hard."

Senior captain and goalkeeper Maddie Dembowski made 3 saves on the evening for her 3rd shutout of the young season.

"We got some great play from Sabina and Maddie H. at outside back tonight.  They both factored into our first 2 goals.  It wasn't our sharpest game but it's never easy for us playing in Swampscott.  Tonight's win is a huge improvement over our result from last year."

Danvers is 6-1 on the season.
