Danvers 4 - Winthrop 0

The Danvers Varsity Girls Soccer Team traveled to Winthrop Thursday evening for and N.E.C. match against the Vikings.  It would be the first time that the Danvers girls would play on Winthrop's gorgeous new turf field.  The Falcons got the only goal they needed 7 minutes into the game on a strike from senior captain Arianna Bezanson.  The goal was Bezanson's 100th career point.  The visitors controlled play throughout and passed the ball extremely well.  Midway through the half, sophomore defender Reese Holland made an outstanding run with the ball up the left side of the field, out pacing several Winthrop defenders.  Holland found Bezanson who passed to freshman Georgia Prouty for the goal.  With under 2 minutes to play, the Falcons added a third when senior Hannah Barclay scored a beautiful goal off a corner kick by senior captain Emma Dunn.

"Georgia's goal was really nice because it was really built up well with Reese's run up the side.  She played excellent tonight at the outside back position.  Hannah's goal was pretty too.  It was her first varsity goal and I'm sure she'll remember it."

Danvers once again controlled play throughout the second half as well.  Emma Dunn and junior Mikayla Shaffaval played very strong defensively and sophomore midfielder Molly Godfried played very well in the middle of the field.  "Molly really played well tonight.  She's one of our best dribblers in tight spaces and she really did well to create and initiate our attacks."

Georgia Prouty scored off a Bezanson pass later in the half to make the final score 4-0.  Juniors Emily Goddard and Emma Gibbons both saw time in goal for the shutout.  Coach Hinchion mentioned the solid play of Holland, Shaffaval, Dunn, Godfried and junior defender Ryley Crosby.  Yet it was the awesome achievement of Arianna Bezanson that had him most excited.

"Only a handful of DHS players have reached that milestone.  And, Ari only played 11 games last year due to Covid.  So her hitting 100 points so early in her senior year is an amazing accomplishment. She's put in a lot of time and hard work towards becoming the player she is today.  I'm really happy for her."

With the win the Falcons improved to 5-0 in N.E.C. play and 5-0-1 overall.  Danvers next plays at Lynnfield on Saturday morning at 10:00.
