Danvers 4 - Swampscott 1
The Danvers High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team wrapped up a 3 game week hosting Swampscott Friday night. The first time the 2 Teams battled, Danvers had to come from behind twice to beat them. The host Falcons made sure early that they would not have to play from behind this time. Junior Arianna Bezanson finished off a pass from classmate Reese Pszenny in the 8th minute of play for the early lead. Senior Haley Murphy doubled the lead in the second quarter finishing off an assist from Senior Captain, Riley DiGilio. The game remained 2-0 going into half time.
"That was a huge goal by Haley. It ended up being the game winner. She made a great run to the back post and was in the perfect position to score that goal. Great hustle by her on that play. She played a very good game tonight."
The third quarter brought to more goals to push the lead to 4-0 for the Falcons. Bezanson got her second goal on a partial breakaway off a pass from Murphy. DiGilio scored the Danvers final goal off of a Bezanson helper. Even with the score in Danvers favor, the Big Blue continued to play hard and pressure the Danvers defense. Mikayla Shaffaval played well defending one of Swampscotts biggest offensive threats and Avery Scharffenberg and Emma Dunn made several strong defensive tackles in the middle of the field. Livvi Anderson used her speed to make sure the Swampscott attack never got any easy chances. Gabby Chisholm continued her excellent play at outside back winning every 50 / 50 ball and playing with high intensity. Mia Jordan and Teagan Price played well in the midfield.
Swampscott got on the board mid way through the 4th quarter on an 18 yard direct kick from Sophie DeGrande. The final score was 4-1. Danvers keeper Holly DeAngelis played a nice game making 5 saves on the night.
"This was a solid win for us tonight, but it certainly wasn't our best soccer. Our touch was off tonight and we made some silly fouls throughout the game that gave Swampscott some opportunities. Swampscott played 80 minutes hard and made nothing easy for us. It's been a long week with 3 games, but we're happy to have gotten 3 more victories against strong competition."
Danvers improved to 7-0 win the win.
